Proposed changes

  • No session key leaves the message stuck as sending. In an encrypted room with no session key, encryptMessage returns undefined. sendMessage and resendMessage then called chat.sendMessage with undefined. The error was caught and only logged, so the message stayed TEMP. Now nothing is posted, and the message is marked ERROR, so the user gets Resend and Delete.
  • Room key distribution kept running after the E2EE client stopped. stop() never cleared the key distribution interval. The interval was also stored only after the first run, so a stop during that run left it running. On the next sign-in, initiateKeyDistribution saw the old timer and skipped its first distribution. stop() now clears the interval, and the interval is stored before the first run.

https://rocketchat.atlassian.net/browse/NATIVE-1870

How to test or reproduce

Unit tests:

  1. pnpm test app/lib/encryption/encryption.test.ts app/lib/methods/sendMessage.test.ts

Device (no session key):

  1. Use a user with E2EE set up (its key pair is on the server).
  2. Open a private encrypted room where the user's stored room key can't be decrypted (for example, the room's E2EKey for that user is random bytes). The composer stays usable and no key banner shows.
  3. Send a message.
  4. Expected: the message shows the red error triangle, and tapping it opens Resend and Delete. Before the fix it stayed in the sending state.

iOS simulator, encrypted room without a session key: the message fails and Resend/Delete opens.

Types of changes

  • Bugfix (non-breaking change which fixes an issue)
  • Improvement (non-breaking change which improves a current function)
  • New feature (non-breaking change which adds functionality)
  • Documentation update (if none of the other choices apply)

Checklist

  • I have read the CONTRIBUTING doc
  • I have signed the CLA
  • Lint and unit tests pass locally with my changes
  • I have added tests that prove my fix is effective or that my feature works (if applicable)
  • I have added necessary documentation (if applicable)
  • Any dependent changes have been merged and published in downstream modules

Further comments

The five new tests fail without the fixes and pass with them.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Messages that cannot be encrypted because a session key is unavailable are now marked as errors and are not sent. Resending such messages also leaves them marked as errors and does not send them.
    • Key distribution now stops when the encryption client is stopped, including during startup, and resumes with an immediate run when the client is restarted.

stop() never cleared the key distribution interval, and the interval was
only stored after the first run, so a stop during that run left it alive.
The next sign-in then skipped its first distribution because a timer
already existed.

NATIVE-1870
sendMessage and resendMessage passed an undefined encryption result to
chat.sendMessage, which threw into a catch that only logged, so the message
stayed TEMP with no retry. They now post nothing and leave it in ERROR.

Walkthrough

The encryption lifecycle now clears scheduled key distribution when stopped and registers the interval before the initial distribution run. Message send and resend paths now record an error and skip the server request when encryption returns no message.

Changes

Key distribution lifecycle

Layer / File(s) Summary
Key distribution lifecycle
app/lib/encryption/encryption.ts, app/lib/encryption/encryption.test.ts
Encryption.stop clears the key-distribution interval. initiateKeyDistribution registers the interval before its initial run. Tests cover stopping during a pending subscription lookup, restarting distribution, and asynchronous setup.

Encrypted message send failures

Layer / File(s) Summary
Send and resend failure handling
app/lib/methods/sendMessage.ts, app/lib/methods/sendMessage.test.ts
When encryption returns no message, new and resent messages receive ERROR status, and the send API is not called. Tests cover both paths.

Stopped clients may continue making key-distribution requests, while slow runs can duplicate that work. These narrow lifecycle issues should be addressed before relying on the new E2EE shutdown behavior.

Minor · Performance & Scalability · Quick win

Prevent overlapping distribution runs.

If the first run takes more than 10 seconds, the interval starts another run before it finishes. This can repeat key-encryption work and API requests. The SDK request has no configured timeout. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Keep the interval registered before the first run, but guard against concurrent runs.

Outside diff Cancel stale key-distribution runs when the client stops.

537-538: Minor · Stability & Availability · Quick win

Cancel stale key-distribution runs when the client stops.

stop() clears the interval, but it does not cancel a keyDistribution invocation that is already past an await. The ENCRYPTION.STOP handler can therefore stop the client while a scheduled run continues to fetchUsersWaitingForGroupKey(...) or provideUsersSuggestedGroupKeys(...). Add a stopped-generation guard. This is separate from preventing overlapping runs.

Review comment at @app/lib/encryption/encryption.ts around lines 537 - 538:
Add a generation token to the key-distribution flow in initiateKeyDistribution,
capture it when a run starts, and invalidate it in stop(). After each await,
check that the captured generation is still current and return before continuing
to fetchUsersWaitingForGroupKey or provideUsersSuggestedGroupKeys if the client
has stopped.
