Enhancement: Honour postgresql_version on SUSE, and support transactional systems.

  • meta: sles, sles16 tags (Leap CI already runs through the existing leap tag)
  • SUSE installs postgresqlNN-server for the requested version (16, 17 or 18; default 18)
  • the installed-version check reads the server packages and parses the major version with an anchored regex
  • new postgresql_transactional_update_reboot_ok variable

Reason: On SUSE the role installed the postgresql-server meta package, so postgresql_version had no effect, and the version check read a bare "18" as "1". The second run then failed with "Setting version 13 while 18 is installed". On a transactional system (SLES 16.1 Immutable) a package install is only staged until reboot.

Result: The role can be re-run on SUSE and installs the requested version. tests_versions now also runs on SUSE. The full test suite passes on SLE 15 SP7, SLE 16.0, SLE 16.1, Leap 15.6 and Leap 16.0. With the variable true the role reboots and continues, with false it only notifies, and unset it fails. Verified on SLES 16.1 Immutable. Other platforms are unchanged.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • SUSE systems now support PostgreSQL 16, 17, and 18, with version 18 as the default.
    • On transactional-update systems, a new setting controls whether the role may reboot when required. If unset, the role stops with an error; if set to disallow reboots, it reports the requirement for custom handling.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Improved installed-version checks to detect mismatches across PostgreSQL packages.

On SUSE the role installed the postgresql-server meta package, so
postgresql_version had no effect, and the version check read the
noarch postgresql package, whose version is a bare "18". The second
converge then failed with "Setting version 13 while 18 is installed".
SLE 15 SP7's meta package installs postgresql17-server while that
package reports 18.

Install postgresqlNN-server on SUSE, default to 18 there, and read the
installed major from the server packages. Extract the major with an
anchored regex so a version without a dot is read correctly on every
distribution. tests_versions now also runs on SUSE.

Handle reboots for transactional update systems such as SLE 16.1
Immutable. A package install there is only staged into a new snapshot
and is not live until reboot. Detect transactional systems and, when
the packages were staged or are not live yet, reboot if
postgresql_transactional_update_reboot_ok is true, notify if false,
and fail if it is unset.

📝 Walkthrough

The role adds SUSE support for PostgreSQL versions 16, 17, and 18, with version 18 as the default. It also adds transactional-update detection and a setting that controls reboot handling when package changes require a reboot.

Changes: SUSE PostgreSQL support and transactional updates

Layer / File(s) Summary
SUSE version and package support
vars/main.yml, vars/Suse.yml, tasks/set_vars.yml, tasks/main.yml, tests/tests_versions.yml, README.md, meta/main.yml
The role selects PostgreSQL 18 by default on SUSE and supports versions 16, 17, and 18. It builds versioned server package names and checks matching installed package versions. Version tests, SUSE Galaxy tags, and README support details are updated.
Transactional-update reboot handling
meta/argument_specs.yml, defaults/main.yml, tasks/assert_role_vars.yml, tasks/set_vars.yml, tasks/main.yml, README.md
The role adds and validates postgresql_transactional_update_reboot_ok, detects transactional-update systems, and checks whether requested packages are live. It reports when a reboot is required, reboots when the option is true, and fails when the option is unset. The README documents the option and its default.

Priority: ➖ Normal

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 78a8b

SUSE hosts can be reported as running the wrong PostgreSQL major version, which can either block a valid install or let a mismatched one pass. On transactional systems where reboots are declined, the role continues into setup steps that need the not-yet-active server package and can fail. These reboot paths also have no tests. Resolve these before merging.

set_vars always sets __postgresql_is_transactional, so the conditions
need no default filter. Say in the argument spec that the reboot
variable applies only to systems with transactional updates.

Add tests for each transactional reboot outcome.

The changed tests/tests_versions.yml exercises version installation, not the new live-package check or the true, false, and null reboot outcomes. Add targeted success and failure tests for these tasks, including a staged package that is not yet live. As per path instructions, “New functionality MUST include test files (tests/tests_*.yml) that exercise the new code paths.”

### postgresql_transactional_update_reboot_ok

This variable is used to handle reboots required by transactional updates. If a
transactional update requires a reboot, the role will proceed with the reboot if
`postgresql_transactional_update_reboot_ok` is set to `true`. If set to `false`, the
role will notify the user that a reboot is required, allowing for custom
handling of the reboot requirement. If this variable is not set, the role will
fail to ensure the reboot requirement is not overlooked. For non-transactional
update systems, this variable is ignored.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | 🏗️ Heavy lift

Read the SUSE major version from the server package name.

On the SLE 15 SP7 case described in the PR context, postgresql17-server reports package version 18. These lines therefore identify an installed PostgreSQL 17 server as version 18. A request for 17 fails the mismatch check, while a request for 18 can pass that check despite the installed 17 server. Extract the SUSE major version from the matched package name; retain the package-version check for platforms where its existing contract applies. Ansible exposes the package name and package version as distinct facts. (docs.ansible.com)

Stop role execution when a staged package is not live and reboot is declined.

If installation stages a new server package and postgresql_transactional_update_reboot_ok is false, this task notifies the user but execution continues to initdb and service setup. The server package is not live until reboot, so those tasks can fail instead of completing the documented notify-only path. End the host’s role work after the notice, or defer package-dependent tasks until the next run. SUSE documents that a transactional update becomes active after reboot. (documentation.suse.com)

Pushed ee37112 for the argument_specs wording and the | d(false), and f710ed4 adds the README example.

The version one isn't an issue: postgresql17-server is 17.x on SLE 15 SP7 (17.11 here). Only the postgresql-server meta package carries the default 18, and the anchored regex excludes it.

false notifying and continuing is the same block merged in firewall, timesync, cockpit and the others, so I kept it consistent. If you'd rather have false end the host, that's a change for all of them and I can do it as a follow-up.
