Do not merge until reviewed. After merging, publish 0.2.3 to PyPI. The repo was at 0.2.1 while PyPI has 0.2.2.

Bugs found by testing pip install veilpiercer (0.2.2) on Oct 6:

  • veilpiercer demo reported Divergence: [] at step 0. SessionLogger.new("demo-A") used the argument as the agent name, so the session IDs were random and find_divergence("demo-A","demo-B") found nothing. new() now takes session_id first. The demo now prints Divergence: True at step 3.
  • The headline VeilPiercerCallback wrote to a different DB and schema. It used ~/.veilpiercer/sessions.db with sessions/steps tables, which the CLI never reads, so LangChain traces never showed up in veilpiercer sessions or diff. It now writes LLM and tool steps through SessionLogger into the same store.
  • veilpiercer dashboard only ever showed embedded demo data. It opened a file:// page whose fetch('/vp/sessions') always fails, and it looked for nexus_mind.db, which nothing writes. It now serves the UI plus /vp/sessions and /vp/diff from the real store on 127.0.0.1:8765.
  • README said "No telemetry. Nothing is sent anywhere", but the package POSTs a first-run ping to veil-piercer.com. That domain currently returns HTTP 530, so the "once per machine" flag never gets set and the ping retries on every session. The ping is now opt-in (VEILPIERCER_TELEMETRY=1), and the README documents it.
  • veil-piercer.com is down (530), so the $197 hosted-dashboard section, the Homepage/Documentation URLs, and veilpiercer quickstart pointed at a dead site. They now point to GitHub.
  • Store location is documented (./vp_sessions.db, override with VEILPIERCER_DB). Removed the stray version.py (0.1.0).
  • Added tests/ (6 tests) and .github/workflows/ci.yml (py3.9 through 3.13, plus a check that the CLI demo finds the fork). Locally: 6 passed.

Note: Actions on this account are currently not starting ("account is locked due to a billing issue"), so CI will show red until that's cleared in Settings → Billing.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

This change updates session persistence, LangChain callback logging, opt-in telemetry, and divergence results. It adds a local HTTP dashboard and updates the CLI demo. It also revises package metadata, documentation, tests, and CI for Python 3.9–3.13.

Changes

Session tracing and dashboard

Layer / File(s) Summary
Session storage and telemetry
veilpiercer/logger.py, tests/test_core.py, README.md
SessionLogger accepts configured database paths and session IDs. Telemetry activation requires an enabled environment setting. Missing-database divergence results are defined, and comparisons return a Boolean. Tests cover session creation, divergence, and telemetry; the README documents the database path and telemetry behavior.
LangChain callback logging
veilpiercer/callback.py, tests/test_core.py
VeilPiercerCallback delegates persistence to SessionLogger and records completed LLM and tool events with timing and error steps. Chain boundary callbacks no longer write records. Tests verify callback events are stored.
Local dashboard and CLI demo
veilpiercer/cli.py, tests/test_core.py, README.md
The CLI serves the packaged UI and session and divergence endpoints on localhost. The dashboard command accepts a port and browser option. The demo removes prior demo sessions before logging new steps. Tests cover the sessions endpoint, and the README documents the dashboard URL.
Package release and CI updates
pyproject.toml, veilpiercer/__version__.py, veilpiercer/version.py, tests/test_core.py, .github/workflows/ci.yml, README.md
Package version declarations change to 0.2.3, Python 3.13 is added to classifiers, and project links point to GitHub. CI tests Python 3.9–3.13 and checks the CLI demo output. The README adds a CI badge and replaces the hosted-dashboard description with a feedback request.

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 1ba14

Batch traces may contain incorrect inputs, and a dashboard database failure may display demo data instead of reporting the problem. Fix these paths before merging.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 1ba14

The dashboard newly exposes stored traces to a browser, but its metadata rendering and caller controls do not fully preserve that boundary. Exposure is limited by loopback binding and normal browser cross-origin restrictions. Making telemetry opt-in improves privacy.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · security · observed: The new live dashboard connects caller-supplied agent names and state versions to unescaped innerHTML interpolation. An actor able to influence that stored metadata can inject active markup when a user compares the affected traces, potentially reading session data through the dashboard origin. Ordinary prompt and response text is escaped; control of those fields alone does not establish this attack. The renderer predates the PR, but its connection to the real store is introduced here.
  • Medium · security · inferred: The new session API relies on loopback binding without validating Host or authenticating requests. If a hostile browser origin can resolve to loopback through DNS rebinding or an equivalent configuration, it may read session metadata and traces as same-origin. Ordinary unrelated-origin reads are restricted by browser same-origin policy because the server grants no CORS permission. This is a conditional disclosure path, not a demonstrated browser exploit.
  • Low · architecture · inferred: Existing SessionLogger.new("AgentName") callers change from receiving fresh session identities to reusing "AgentName" as the session identity. Repeated invocations can therefore aggregate unrelated traces and duplicate step indexes under one displayed session, weakening trace ownership and attribution. Keyword agent callers remain compatible; external adoption of the old positional contract is unknown.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The supported disclosure scope is session metadata and stored trace content in the database selected by the running dashboard. The listing exposes the latest 50 sessions, while comparison accepts arbitrary session identities. Injected same-origin script could read addressable traces. No HTTP write route or operating-system execution path is evidenced.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — An actor influencing stored agent or state-version metadata can supply active markup that reaches the live comparison renderer. Execution requires the affected comparison to be rendered. A separate disclosure path requires a hostile origin to reach loopback as same-origin; browser and network restrictions may prevent that path. Neither attack is established merely by submitting ordinary LLM prompt text.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The dashboard enforces loopback network binding but no application caller identity, Host allowlist, or per-session authorization. It emits no CORS allowance. Session selectors are parameterized SQLite values, and prompt/response rendering uses HTML escaping; metadata interpolation does not consistently use that control.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — Trace ownership depends on callers choosing distinct session identities: the table has no session/step uniqueness constraint, each logger restarts its counter, and readers aggregate by session identity. That pre-existing storage behavior becomes relevant to more callers through the changed positional factory contract. Retry, resumption, and concurrent scheduling guarantees are not demonstrated.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Render all trace metadata as text, using textContent or equivalent escaping rather than interpolating it into HTML. Preserve the existing escaping of prompt and response bodies.
  • proposed — Define an explicit browser-to-local-service trust policy, including strict Host validation and, where local cross-process disclosure matters, an unpredictable access credential. Preserve loopback binding and avoid granting arbitrary-origin CORS access.

🌐 Web query:

official LangChain Core callback handler contract run_id concurrent callbacks same handler instance LLM callbacks

💡 Result:

**Short answer:** LangChain Core’s callback contract supplies a `run_id` to each LLM callback, so handlers can associate events with their run. But the contract does **not** promise that callbacks on a shared handler instance are serialized or that the handler is thread-safe.

The official `LLMManagerMixin` signatures include `run_id` on LLM start, token, end, and error callbacks. The API describes it as the ID of the current run. ([github.com](https://github.com/langchain-ai/langchain/blob/master/libs/core/langchain_core/callbacks/base.py?utm_source=openai)) For chat models, the start event is `on_chat_model_start`; `on_llm_start` is for non-chat models. ([github.com](https://github.com/langchain-ai/langchain/blob/master/libs/core/langchain_core/callbacks/base.py?utm_source=openai))

The implementation also shows async callback dispatch using `asyncio.gather` for handlers not marked `run_inline`, so callback work can run concurrently. That establishes concurrency in dispatch—not a guarantee that the same handler instance will receive overlapping calls in every execution path. ([github.com](https://github.com/langchain-ai/langchain/blob/master/libs/core/langchain_core/callbacks/manager.py?utm_source=openai))

**Practical implication:** Treat a shared handler as potentially concurrent. Keep per-run state keyed by `run_id`, and protect shared mutable state with appropriate synchronization. The sources document `run_id` and dispatch behavior, but do not establish an explicit thread-safety or per-handler serialization guarantee. These sources cover the current reference/API and `master` source, not a specific pinned LangChain Core version. ([reference.langchain.com](https://reference.langchain.com/python/langchain-core/callbacks/base/BaseCallbackHandler?utm_source=openai))

site:github.com/langchain-ai/langchain/blob/master/libs/core/langchain_core/runnables/base.py Runnable.batch ThreadPoolExecutor config callbacks shared same handler parallel invocations

💡 Result:

**Yes—`Runnable.batch()` can invoke multiple inputs concurrently, and each invocation may receive the same callback handler object.** The default `batch()` maps inputs through a thread-pool executor, while `get_config_list()` duplicates a single config for the batch. The config type allows callbacks to be provided as a list, so that list—and its handler instances—is reused across those per-input configs. ([github.com](https://github.com/langchain-ai/langchain/blob/master/libs/core/langchain_core/runnables/base.py?utm_source=openai))

**Implication:** If the handler is stateful, its callback methods can be called concurrently. Make its shared state thread-safe, or use per-invocation handler instances. The cited source is the moving `master` branch, not a pinned commit or release. ([github.com](https://github.com/langchain-ai/langchain/blob/master/libs/core/langchain_core/runnables/base.py?utm_source=openai))

Key LLM state by run_id.

When Runnable.batch() runs multiple inputs with this shared callback, on_llm_start can overwrite _last_prompt, _model, and _t0 before an earlier run reaches on_llm_end. The earlier response can then be logged with the later run's prompt, model, and latency. Use the callback's run_id to store and retrieve per-run state.

Update the LLM callback state in `on_llm_start`, `on_llm_end`, and
`on_llm_error` to be keyed by `run_id`, so concurrent runs retain and log their
own prompt, model, and start time. Retrieve and remove each run’s state on
completion or error, while preserving the existing fallback behavior when no
`run_id` is provided.

Surface database failures instead of showing demo data.

A SQLite error in either endpoint can occur before _send, so the request gets no HTTP response. The threaded server logs the uncaught exception, but the dashboard treats failed requests as standalone mode and silently displays demo data. Return and log a JSON 500, then show that error in the dashboard while preserving demo fallback when no server is available.

Update the dashboard handlers in do_GET to catch database failures from
list_sessions and find_divergence, log them, and return a JSON 500 response. In

Treat only a schema-less database as empty.

When VEILPIERCER_DB points to an existing empty SQLite file, the missing-file guard is bypassed. Both find_divergence and list_sessions then query the missing vp_sessions table and can raise sqlite3.OperationalError. The CLI and dashboard call sites have no application-level handling for that error.

Check for schema objects before querying. Return the empty result only when none exist. Do not catch every OperationalError: an unrelated database also raises that error for the missing vp_sessions table.
