The app had seven overlapping types for a Room's t field, plus two values in the main enum that were not room types. This PR leaves one of each concept:
RoomType ('c' | 'p' | 'd' | 'l') is a const object plus a union type. RoomType.CHANNEL and 'c' both type-check, so existing literal comparisons stay valid. It replaces RoomTypes, both TRoomType types and the SubscriptionType enum. ISubscription.t, IRoom.t, navigation params and the RoomView screen inputs are all typed RoomType.
Threads are opened with the parent Room's type. SubscriptionType.THREAD was a navigation marker, not a room type: a RoomView with tmid is a thread. SubscriptionType.E2E had no uses.
Leave/delete room actions carry scope: 'room' | 'team' instead of ERoomType, which was only ever used as a team-or-not flag.
Permalink path segments (channel, group, direct) come from one two-way map in roomTypePath.ts. It replaces ERoomTypes and the separate maps in permalinks, push notifications and the deep-link saga.
RoomView's preview room has t: RoomType, with no casts. A RoomView opened without params (the Master-Detail empty state on tablets) renders the empty background and its header only, and never builds a room store.
Room kind predicates (isGroupChat, isDiscussion, isTeamMain, isTeamRoom) live in one typed module. isGroupChat loses its @ts-nocheck, and the Apps action-button filters use the shared predicates.
Behaviour differences:
Inside an Omnichannel room's thread, the Omnichannel permissions now load, because the thread knows its Room type is l.
The Apps direct_multiple filter also counts a Direct Message by usernames, the same rule isGroupChat uses everywhere else.
A copied link from an Omnichannel room reads channels/... instead of undefined/....
Open a Room with threads and tap "View thread" on a message: the thread opens and loads its replies.
Room header → Threads, then tap a thread: it opens.
Room actions → Search messages, search for a thread reply and tap it: the thread opens on that message.
Long-press a message in a Channel → "Get link": the link is <server>/channel/<name>?msg=<id>. In a private Group it is /group/.
Create a Channel, then Room info → Edit → Delete: the app returns to the rooms list with "Room deleted successfully".
New message → Create direct message: only 1-on-1 Direct Messages are listed.
On a tablet, open the app with no room selected: the right pane shows the empty background with an empty header. Open a room from the list: it loads in the right pane.

Walkthrough
The pull request replaces legacy room-type enums with a shared RoomType definition across application data, APIs, and navigation. It adds room-kind and path-conversion helpers, updates thread navigation to retain the parent room type, and changes leave and delete actions to use a room or team scope.
Changes
Room type and navigation migration
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Shared room type contract and classification app/definitions/*, app/lib/methods/helpers/roomKind.ts, app/lib/apps/*
RoomType replaces the removed room-type enums. Shared predicates classify group chats, discussions, team main rooms, and team rooms. App action-button room data now includes optional usernames and uses RoomType.
Room types map to and from permalink segments. Deep links and notifications use that mapping. Thread navigation passes the room type from the route instead of setting it to thread.
Room APIs and services app/lib/services/restApi.ts, app/lib/methods/*, app/lib/services/voip/*, app/lib/hooks/useVideoConf/*
Room-related API and service parameters now use RoomType. The API type mapping and room-loading branches retain their existing mappings and request behavior.
Application consumers and validation app/containers/*, app/views/*, app/ee/omnichannel/reducers/inquiry.test.ts, app/views/ShareView/__tests__/Header.test.tsx
Room-type props, navigation parameters, checks, fixtures, and stories use RoomType. The share header tests cover group and one-to-one direct messages.
Room and team removal scope app/actions/room.ts, app/sagas/room.js, app/reducers/room.test.ts, app/views/RoomActionsView/index.tsx, app/views/RoomInfoEditView/hooks/useRoomDeletionActions.tsx, app/views/TeamChannelsView.tsx
Shared Omnichannel links cannot open their rooms, and a failed direct-message creation can leave the room screen unready. Address these before merging.

RocketChat/Rocket.Chat · error · `Meteor.Error`
# error-invalid-room
`error-invalid-room`
## Error message
Invalid room
## What it means
Thrown by the 'getRoomByTypeAndName' Meteor method when either the room type or the room name argument is falsy. Both are required to locate a room (type selects the room-type-specific finder, name is the lookup key). The error is reported as 'error-invalid-room' with method 'getRoomByTypeAndName'.
## Solutions
1. Pass both arguments: type must be a room-type string like 'c', 'p', 'd' or 'l', name the room identifier
2. Validate the inputs at the call site before invoking the method
3. Parse room type and name from the route before calling
### Example fix
// before
Meteor.call('getRoomByTypeAndName', roomType, name ?? '');
// after
if (!roomType || !name) return;
Meteor.call('getRoomByTypeAndName', roomType, name);
Defensive patterns
Strategy: validation
### Validate before calling
if (!type || !name) {
throw new Error('type and name are required');
}
Meteor.call('getRoomByTypeAndName', type, name);
### Type guard
const ROOM_TYPES = new Set(['c', 'p', 'd', 'l', 't']);
function isRoomType(v: unknown): v is 'c' | 'p' | 'd' | 'l' | 't' {
return typeof v === 'string' && ROOM_TYPES.has(v);
}
### Prevention
* Parse both values from the route and skip the call when either is absent
* Keep argument order (type, name) consistent across wrappers
## When it happens
Trigger: Meteor.call('getRoomByTypeAndName', undefined, 'general'); calling with type '' or name '' ; building the call from optional route params that were never filled.
Common situations: Deep links like /channel/ handled before parsing; lookups where the type letter (c/p/d/l) is missing; refactors that swap argument order and pass undefined.

# Room
A room in Rocket.Chat is where conversations take place. The room object represents the details of rooms created in a workspace.
There are at least two fields on the room object.
* `_id`: The room/user ID (depends on the room type).
* `t`: The room type. See the table below for details.
## Properties
The `Room` object has the following fields:
Field | Data type | Description
--- | --- | ---
`_id` | String | The room ID.
`t` | String | The room type. E.g `c` = channel, `d` = direct message, `l` = livechat, `p`=private chat
`name` | String | The room’s name.
`fname` | String | The full name of the room.
`msgs` | Number | The number of messages in the room.
`default` | Boolean | Indicates if the room is the default room.
`broadcast` | Boolean | Indicates if the room is a broadcast room.
`featured` | Boolean | Indicates if the room is featured.
`announcement` | String | The announcement or summary of the room.
`joinCodeRequired` | Boolean | Indicates if a join code is required to enter the room.
`ts` | Date | Timestamp of when the room was created.
`cl` | Boolean | Indicates if the room is a channel.
`ro` | Boolean | Indicates if the room is read-only.
`favorite` | Boolean | Indicates if the room is marked as a favorite.
`archived` | Boolean | Indicates if the room is archived.
`description` | String | Description or summary of the room.
`createdOTR` | Boolean | Indicates if the room was created as an OTR (off-the-record) room.
`e2eKeyId` | String | Key ID for end-to-end encryption in the room.
`federated` | Boolean | (Deprecated) Indicates if the room is federated.
`customFields` | Object | (Deprecated) Custom fields for additional room information.
`channel` | { _id: string } | Information about the channel the room belongs to.
## Room types
* `d`: Direct messages
* `c`: Public channel
* `p`: Private channel
* `discussions`: Team or channel discussions
* `teams`: Workspace teams
* `l`: Livechat
* `v`: Omnichannel VoIP rooms
The information that comes with the room object changes according to its type.
Direct chat
Public chat room
Private chat room
A DM room object contains two fields:
* `_id`: The room ID.
* `t`: The room type (in this case, the value is `d`)
For example:
JSON
`{
"_id": "room-id",
"t": "d"
}`
A public chat room contains information about the room, as follows:
* `_id`: The room ID.
* `t`: The room type (in this case, the value is `c`).
* `name`: The room name.
* `u`: The room creator (it may return a null user).
* `topic`: (Optional) The room topic.
* `muted`: (Optional) A collection of muted users by their username.
* `jitsiTimeout`: (Optional) If the Jitsi app is used in your workspace, this parameter may be present.
For example:
JSON
`{
"_id": "room-id",
"t": "c",
"name": "room-name",
"u": { "_id": "user-id", "username": "username" },
"topic": "room-topic",
"muted": [ "username" ],
"jitsiTimeout": { "$date": 1480377601 }
}`
This type of room resembles a public chat room:
* `_id`: The room ID.
* `t`: The room type (in this case, the value is `p`).
* `name`: The room name.
* `u`: The room creator (it may return a null user).
* `topic`: (Optional) The room topic.
* `muted`: (Optional) A collection of muted users by their username.
* `jitsiTimeout`: (Optional) If the Jitsi app is used in your workspace, this parameter may be present.
* `ro`: Flags if the room is read-only.
For example:
Custom
`{
"_id": "room-id",
"t": "p",
"name": "room-name",
"u": { "_id": null, "username": null },
"topic": "room-topic",
"ro": false // This room is not read-only
}`
The IRoom interface represents the Room object, defining the properties and their types that can be associated with a Room. Room information is stored in the `rocketchat_room `collection on MongoDB.

## The room object
Rooms endpoints work with any room type through one shared object. A trimmed example from Get Room Information:
`{
"room": {
"_id": "66ed2dba40141d95f32c292b",
"name": "new-channel",

Fields you use most often:
* `_id`: The room ID, passed as `roomId` in requests. Rooms endpoints identify rooms by ID, not name.
* `t`: The room type — `c` public channel, `p` private group, `d` direct message, `l` livechat. Rooms endpoints accept all types.
* `teamId`: Set when the room belongs to a team.
* `lm`: The timestamp of the last message.
## Common workflows
Share a file in a room
1. Upload the media file to get a file ID.
2. Send the uploaded file to the room as a message.
3. Delete the uploaded file if you need to withdraw it.
Organize a busy room
1. Create a discussion to branch a topic into its own room.
2. Mark the room as favorite and tune its notifications.
3. Mute a user who is disrupting the conversation.
Clean up or retire a room
1. Clear room history for a time range, or export the room first to keep a record.
2. Archive the room, or delete it permanently.
## Conventions
* These endpoints work across all room types. Type-specific management lives in the Channels, Groups, and Teams APIs.
* Rooms endpoints identify rooms by `roomId`. Use Get Rooms to list the rooms you belong to and find IDs.
* Administrative actions such as clearing history or viewing any room require permissions like `clean-channel-history` or admin room access; each endpoint page lists its requirements.</excerpt>

# Omnichannel
With the Rocket.Chat Omnichannel (opens in new tab) feature, you can talk to your website visitors, regardless of the channel they choose to connect with you.
Omnichannel endpoints are of two types:
* Endpoints requiring authentication: The workspace admins and managers use the endpoints that require authentication with a login method.
* Endpoints not requiring authentication: Visitors can use the endpoints that require no authentication. These endpoints require a visitor token, which is like an authentication parameter for visitors. Visitors can register themselves by providing a unique random string as the token, which can be used for similar endpoints.
This section includes the following endpoints:
* Create and manage livechat users—agents and managers.
* View agent analytics details.
* Manage livechat visitors and rooms.
* View and manage livechat appearance and functionalities such as triggers, business hours, priorities, and canned responses.
The Livechat Widget API (opens in new tab) allows you to further customize and integrate Livechat widget functionalities.
## The livechat room object
Omnichannel conversations happen in livechat rooms. A trimmed example from Get or Create Livechat Rooms (opens in new tab):
JSON
`{
"room": {
"_id": "kCJDd5peKiZnGJLPq",
"fname": "Mary",
"t": "l",

}`
JSON

Fields you use most often:
* `_id`: The livechat room ID, passed as `rid` in most room endpoints.
* `t`: The room type — always `l` for livechat rooms.
* `v`: The visitor in the conversation, including the visitor `token` that authenticates visitor-side calls.
* `departmentId`: The department handling the conversation.
* `open`: Whether the conversation is still active.
## Common workflows
Run a conversation from the visitor side
1. Register the visitor (opens in new tab) with a unique token string.
2. Get or create the livechat room (opens in new tab) using that token.
3. Close the room (opens in new tab) when the conversation ends.
Manage the queue as an agent or manager
1. List livechat rooms (opens in new tab) to see open, queued, and on-hold conversations.
2. Forward a room (opens in new tab) to another agent or department, or put it on hold (opens in new tab).
3. Update agent status (opens in new tab) to control availability.
## Conventions
* Visitor-side endpoints authenticate with the visitor `token` instead of the `X-Auth-Token`/`X-User-Id` headers.
* Agent and manager endpoints require Omnichannel permissions such as `view-l-room` or the livechat agent and manager roles; each endpoint page lists its requirements.
* List endpoints support `count`, `offset`, and `sort` query parameters (opens in new tab).

# Omnichannel Settings
Updated
Configure the Omnichannel settings to streamline conversations from various communication channels into Rocket.Chat. Omnichannel allows you to set up and receive conversations from pop-up Livechat widgets on your website or channels like Facebook to your Rocket.Chat workspace.
To access the following Omnichannel settings, go to Manage Image: Screenshot 2025-12-23 130522.png > Workspace > Settings > Omnichannel.
## General Omnichannel settings
Field | Description
--- | ---
Omnichannel enabled | Enable the Omnichannel feature on your workspace.
Allow visitors to finish conversations | Disable this option to prevent visitors from closing ongoing conversations. This hides the Finish this Chat button on the widget and blocks the Close Livechat Room API for visitors, allowing only agents to close conversations.
Request comment when closing conversation | If this option is enabled, agents must add a comment to close a chat.

// before
Meteor.call('getRoomByTypeAndName', roomType, name ?? '');
// after
if (!roomType || !name) return;
Meteor.call('getRoomByTypeAndName', roomType, name);
Defensive patterns
Strategy: validation
### Validate before calling
if (!type || !name) {
throw new Error('type and name are required');
}
Meteor.call('getRoomByTypeAndName', type, name);
### Type guard
const ROOM_TYPES = new Set(['c', 'p', 'd', 'l', 't']);
function isRoomType(v: unknown): v is 'c' | 'p' | 'd' | 'l' | 't' {
return typeof v === 'string' && ROOM_TYPES.has(v);
}

### Description:
Following a major upgrade from 2.4 to 3.11.1, we started seeing several errors crop up in the log, listed as "`[error-invalid-user]`". While there is some semblance of a stack trace, there's little to no additional information to explain which user is generating this issue; or from what channel this issue is occurring in...just that there's a problem.
I've looked through our users both in RC's administration panel, as well as directly in MongoDB; and nothing is jumping out at me as out of place or misconfigured.
### Steps to reproduce:
1. Upgrade from (manual) 2.4 to (manual) 3.11.1
2. Check Rocket.Chat logs
* The errors do not always appear immediately
### Expected behavior:
No exceptions -- or at the very least, a little more detail in the exception log.
### Actual behavior:
I've redacted the stack trace in this section for brevity. Actual logs will be listed in full in the 'Relevant Logs' section.
`I20210421-14:09:58.172(-4) Exception while invoking method getRoomByTypeAndName Error: Invalid user [error-invalid-user]
I20210421-14:09:58.431(-4) Exception while invoking method createDirectMessage Error: Invalid user [error-invalid-user]
`
While I do not have the exception to share, I have also seen similar messages for the method "`loadMissedMessages`" in the recent past as well.

Resolve name-only Omnichannel links before opening them.

Update the room lookup branch in open to include RoomType.OMNICHANNEL alongside

Preserve the room-type guard.
The existing test supplies t: 'not-a-room-type' with no cursor and expects the sync path. This condition calls loadMessagesForRoom instead, so the test fails. Restore runtime validation before the history fallback. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Reject incomplete route parameters before opening the room.
When createDirectMessage fails for a search item without rid, goRoom still navigates with a non-null params object. This check then mounts OpenRoomView with an undefined rid. observeRoom returns without setting ready, so the room screen remains unready instead of showing the empty-room background. Check rid and t before parsing and opening the room. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Proposed changes
The app had seven overlapping types for a Room's
tfield, plus two values in the main enum that were not room types. This PR leaves one of each concept:RoomType('c' | 'p' | 'd' | 'l') is a const object plus a union type.RoomType.CHANNELand'c'both type-check, so existing literal comparisons stay valid. It replacesRoomTypes, bothTRoomTypetypes and theSubscriptionTypeenum.ISubscription.t,IRoom.t, navigation params and the RoomView screen inputs are all typedRoomType.SubscriptionType.THREADwas a navigation marker, not a room type: a RoomView withtmidis a thread.SubscriptionType.E2Ehad no uses.scope: 'room' | 'team'instead ofERoomType, which was only ever used as a team-or-not flag.channel,group,direct) come from one two-way map inroomTypePath.ts. It replacesERoomTypesand the separate maps in permalinks, push notifications and the deep-link saga.t: RoomType, with no casts. A RoomView opened without params (the Master-Detail empty state on tablets) renders the empty background and its header only, and never builds a room store.isGroupChat,isDiscussion,isTeamMain,isTeamRoom) live in one typed module.isGroupChatloses its@ts-nocheck, and the Apps action-button filters use the shared predicates.Behaviour differences:
