26-36: Fix the shared pulse lifecycle when the Skeleton unmounts.
stopPulseresetspulse.valueto 1 when the last skeleton unmounts. It does not first cancel the repeating animation. Assigning a plain number to a Reanimated shared value normally cancels the running animation, so this is probably fine. One edge case remains. In React strict or dev double-invoke, the effect runs as start, stop, start. The counter handles this correctly.
No change is required. I do not retain this as a finding.

Automated review: 0 bugs, 2 cleanups, 1 decision.
Decision: the shimmer is a ~40 ms blip, not a sweep. app/containers/Avatar/AvatarSkeleton.tsx:27 (library lib/skeleton-placeholder.js, animatedGradientStyle)
Severity: low · Likelihood: always, whenever the skeleton shows
ELI5: the shiny stripe runs across the whole screen width, but the avatar is a small window. The stripe is only inside that window for a split second of each loop.
Details: the gradient is as wide as the avatar (shimmerWidth is undefined). It translates from -WINDOW_WIDTH to +WINDOW_WIDTH every 800 ms, so it overlaps a 25–40 px avatar for only about 5–9% of each cycle. That overlap falls at the middle of Easing.ease, where the motion is fastest, and on tablets it is shorter still. shimmerWidth can't fix it, because it is added to the travel distance.
Steps to reproduce:
- Throttle the network and open the room list with a cold cache.
- Watch an avatar that is still loading after 150 ms.
- The highlight flickers briefly about every 800 ms instead of sweeping across.
Options:
- (a) Accept it.
- (b) Add a hunk to the existing patch so the travel uses the measured
layout.widthinstead ofWINDOW_WIDTH. - (c) Go back to a pulse.

Cleanup: this test pins library internals. Severity: low · Likelihood: n/a (maintenance)
ELI5: the test opens up the skeleton library to check its insides, so it will break when the library changes even if the avatar still looks right.
Details: the mask test finds the library's onLayout View, fires a synthetic layout, and re-renders MaskedView.props.maskElement. In effect it checks that the width, height and borderRadius we pass to SkeletonPlaceholder.Item come back out. The "appears after the delay" test repeats AvatarImage.test.tsx ("shows the skeleton until the image loads" and "never shows the skeleton when the image loads before the delay").
Steps to reproduce:
- Bump or refactor
react-native-skeleton-placeholderin a way that keeps its behaviour but changes how it measures (for example, drops theonLayoutwrapper). - Run
pnpm test app/containers/Avatar. - This test fails, while the avatar on screen is unchanged.
Proposed change: delete AvatarSkeleton.test.tsx. The delay is already covered through AvatarImage.

Cleanup: take numbers, not a whole ImageStyle. Severity: low · Likelihood: low (latent)
ELI5: the component asks for a full style but only uses three numbers from it, so the type promises more than it handles.
Details: line 28 reads style.width, style.height and style.borderRadius off ImageStyle, which allows arrays, registered style ids and percentage strings. It works today only because Avatar.tsx:79 passes the inline avatarStyle object.
Steps to reproduce:
- Pass
style={[styles.avatar]}(an array) toAvatarImage. - Wait for the skeleton to show.
- The skeleton item gets
undefinedwidth and height, and no shimmer shows.
Proposed change: make the props { size: number; borderRadius: number } (in AvatarImage too, or build avatarStyle inside AvatarImage), and drop the ImageStyle import.

Proposed changes
Image avatars now have a grey background and show a shimmering skeleton while loading, using
react-native-skeleton-placeholder, which the app already uses for other loading states. The skeleton only appears if the image takes longer than 150 ms, so cached avatars don't flash it. Emoji avatars are unchanged.Issue(s)

Closes #4809
How to test or reproduce
WrongServerstory. It should end on a grey tile with no endless shimmer.TZ=UTC pnpm test app/containers/AvatarScreens affected: everything that renders

Screenshots are from an Android emulator (Pixel 9). Loading frames were taken while a local proxy held the avatar requests.
The video is the room list on iOS (Light theme) with avatar requests held for 10 s. Two direct messages arrive about 4 s apart, and both rows shimmer until their avatar loads.

The room list row forrctest-avatar-bg-2also uses the transparent avatar. The grey background shows behind the transparent avatar, and the emoji avatar keeps no background.Types of changes

react-native-skeleton-placeholder, which the app already uses for the video call and composer autocomplete loading states, so there is no second skeleton implementation to maintain.patches/react-native-skeleton-placeholder+5.2.4.patch: React Native 0.86 (chore: upgrade to React Native 0.86 / Expo SDK 57 #7691) removedStyleSheet.absoluteFillObject, which the library used to size its shimmer, so the shimmer had zero size and never showed. The patch switches it toStyleSheet.absoluteFill. The video call and composer autocomplete skeletons use the same library, so their shimmer comes back too (not checked on a device).surfaceNeutralfor the box (the same grey as the avatar background, so there is no colour jump when the image loads) andsurfaceSelectedfor the shimmer band, in every theme. In Light the band is slightly darker than the box; in Dark and Black it is lighter.surfaceNeutral:#161717on#0A0A0Aon iOS,#16181aon#000000on Android) is only a little lighter than the background, so it is subtle there. It is kept on purpose: it is the colour the Black theme already uses for neutral surfaces, the tile and the skeleton stay the same colour so nothing changes when the image loads, and the shimmer band (surfaceSelected) is brighter, so the loading state still shows. A lighter grey would need a Black-only colour just for avatars. The web client has no Black theme to compare with.recyclingKey={uri}on the expo-imageImagedoes this; without it expo-image kept the old picture, and it showed through the skeleton.app/containers/Avatar/__tests__/:AvatarImage.test.tsxandAvatarSkeleton.test.tsxare new, andAvatar.test.tsxmoved there becauseAvatar.tsxchanged. The 150 ms delay isSKELETON_DELAYinconstants.ts, so the skeleton and its tests share one value. The skeleton also goes away when the image fails to load, so a failed avatar ends on the grey tile.Summary by CodeRabbit
