Hi π
11,038,143 installs. That is how many times code I maintain has been downloaded.
About 680,000 a month right now.
What I maintain:
- react-native-gifted-chat - 14,442 β, 444,000 downloads/month
- react-native-zoom-reanimated - 195,000/month
- react-native-background-downloader - 79,000/month
- react-native-action-cable - 17,000/month
- react-native-chat - the modern successor to Gifted Chat
- react-native-cloud-sync - iCloud key-value store, CloudKit, iCloud Drive and Google Drive behind one API
Everything I publish: https://www.npmjs.com/~kesha-antonov
Gifted Chat is the one to look at
It went 14 months without a release. 150,000 people a month kept installing it anyway.
I shipped the next one. Then 25 more.
Today:
- 76% of the code is mine - 5,437 lines out of 7,176
- 85% of every commit in two years is mine - 401 out of 471
- 404 commits, more than anyone, including the original author at 303
- 154 issues and 29 pull requests were rotting when I arrived. Now: 3 open issues
- downloads went 168,000 β 444,000 a month. Before me: flat for 30 months straight
Same story everywhere else. The old react-native-background-downloader gets 200 downloads a week.
Mine gets 22,000.
What maintenance actually is
- every new React Native version can break native code. Someone ports it before your build fails
- every Reanimated, Gesture Handler and Expo SDK bump
- iOS background limits, Android foreground services, Gradle, AGP, Kotlin
- reproducing your bug on a device I don't own, from a stack trace
- your PRs, your docs, your migration codemods
None of it ships anything for me. All of it keeps your app building on Monday.
Sponsoring buys my time
Faster issues. Same-week support for new RN and Expo releases. Real docs instead of a stale README.
If one of these is already in your package.json, you are getting the value today.
Sponsoring is what keeps it coming.
MIT and Apache 2.0. Free forever.
